Surf fishing can be a great way to spend a few hours while in Duck. I recommend hit the beach at low tide to locate the troughs and holes. If you don't see any obvious troughs move up or down the beach until you find some. You will want to fish these areas and particularly the edges were breaks in the sand bars create current. I suggest walking in and out with the surf. False cast while walking in towards the ocean, deliver your cast then rod tip down and strip your fly while walking back away from the surf. Work with the surf and not against it. The Outer Banks surf can be dynamic so fish in between the larger sets of waves.

The Dirty Harry Fly is really all you need to catch fish on the Outer Banks surf. Clousers also work well. Whichever you use make sure the eyes are medium or large to get down in the water column. Chartruese is hard to beat in the surf however white and pink are great choices.
